Request detail:

Can you please provide me with the information for the following calendar years, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 to date?
How many animals were your firefighters called out to rescue?

Within the cost limit, could you provide some detail of the incidents you were called out to?  For example the type of animal and location.

If it is possible within the cost limit, can you please provide a figure for how much these animal rescues have cost the service?    This has been quantified by some fire authorities in recent press coverage - including this example from the Evening Standard in London.

Response detail:

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request. Unfortunately the way information is recorded within our Incident Recording System (IRS) we are not able to answer accurately how many animals have been rescued by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). We are however able to provide the number of times that SFRS was called to an animal rescue during the time frame requested. This was 257 times in the period 2012-2016 (2012=42, 2013=56, 2014=61, 2015=47, 2016=51). Please find attached a spreadsheet that shows the detail of each animal rescue incident that Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The type of animal rescued is recorded as either a ‘Farm animal, e.g. horse or cow’, ‘Cat, dog or other domestic pet’ or ‘Bird’. The category ‘Lift Heavy animal’ is also used in animal rescues. Occasionally the type of animal selected is ‘Other’ and more information may be supplied in the ‘details’ field. The spreadsheet attached contains relevant information taken from our Incident Recording System. With regard to charges issued for rescuing any of the animals, I can confirm that we have not charged for any animal rescues during this period. The indicative cost provided for each rescue is based upon the equivalent special services charges tariff for 2016/17 (please follow the link) https://www.shropshirefire.gov.uk/meeting/agenda/annual-review-charges-special-services-201617 and is calculated by determining the number and type of vehicles attended and the length of time they were in attendance. The indicative costs are shown on the spreadsheet for 2016 and 2015.
