Diesel fuelled generators

My questions relate to value for money and cleaner air. As part of the ever increasing concerns with the air quality in the UK, the use of diesel fuelled engines are becoming increasingly less desirable. The Government are beginning to impose sanctions against diesel fuelled vehicles but there are other devices, such as generators, that are used. Should the Service continue investing money in products that damage the public health of the country?

Please can you provide the answers to the questions below?

1.      How many diesel fuelled generators do you have as either primary, back-up or mobile solutions?

2.      What is the output rated power for each unit purchase and or in operation?

3.      If know was there a consideration to the carbon foot print of the generators at the time of purchase?

4.      What was the per generator capital cost for each diesel fuelled generator made in the last 10 years?

5.      What are you operating costs and maintenance regimes for these devices?

6.      Do you have issues with their reliability or performance?

7.      What is the expected replacement plan for diesel fuelled generators currently deployed in service?

8.      Are you considering opting for an alternative solution such as hydrogen fuelled generators (Fuel Cell technology)?

9.      What would be the principle replacement criteria if any when you planned to replace the current diesel fuelled generators?

10.     Are there any know regulations or pending legislation that will impact your decision to purchase an alternative environmental clean: zero emission and low noise solution?

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request. Please find the answers to your questions below: 1. How many diesel fuelled generators do you have as either primary, back-up or mobile solutions? Backup 2, 1 at Shrewsbury and 1 at Telford Fire Station. 2. What is the output rated power for each unit purchase and or in operation? Shrewsbury - 160 KVA Telford 60KVA. 3. If know was there a consideration to the carbon foot print of the generators at the time of purchase? No. 4. What was the per generator capital cost for each diesel fuelled generator made in the last 10 years? Shrewsbury was part of the site refurbishment, not individually costed. Telford older than 10 years. 5. What are you operating costs and maintenance regimes for these devices? Annual maintenance carried out through Shropshire Council at £385 per annum at Shrewsbury, £365 per annum at Telford. Local testing. Use of fuel is not recorded. 6. Do you have issues with their reliability or performance? No. 7. What is the expected replacement plan for diesel fuelled generators currently deployed in service? Not currently looking at replacement. 8. Are you considering opting for an alternative solution such as hydrogen fuelled generators (Fuel Cell technology)? No. 9. What would be the principle replacement criteria if any when you planned to replace the current diesel fuelled generators? Reliability, availability, maintainability, life cycle cost. 10. Are there any know regulations or pending legislation that will impact your decision to purchase an alternative environmental clean: zero emission and low noise solution? No.
