Fire caused by Xmas Lights

Reference:

1053

Request detail:

I would like to have the number of fires caused/started by lights on a Christmas tree in each of the past five years, so from 2015 to 2019.

Please, make sure that the information is in a machine readable format i.e. excel or csv.
Please provide me with figures broken down by year - i.e. separate statistics for 2015, 2016, and by local authority, in the area covered by your Fire Brigade.
In addition, where there has been a fire caused/started by lights on a Christmas tree, I would like information on the damage caused, the cost of damage and any injuries or fatalities as a result of the fire.

Response detail:

A search of our Incident Recording System has revealed that Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service did not attend any incidents from 2015 to 2019 caused/started by lights on a Christmas tree.

I can confirm we searched for incidents where the source of the ignition contained the following criteria:

  • Electric lighting – other incandescent light bulbs
  • Electric lighting – Other lights
  • Any string containing the word ‘Fairy’

And where the damage included any of these words:

  • Christmas
  • Xmas
  • X-mas
  • Decoration
  • Celebration
  • Festive
  • Tree
