Request detail:

This is an FoI request to determine how many fire services have adopted 51mm hoses in the wake of recommendations by the Building Disaster Assessment Group (BDAG) which reported in 2004*.

Does your fire service have 51mm hoses available as part of its arsenal to fight fires?
If not, why?

*A summary of the BDAG's findings 'The Building Disaster Assessment Group - Key Research Findings' was published in December 2004. The report found the "51mm hose provided an improved performance when used for high rise firefighting. In particular it was found to improve on the pressures and flows available at the branch."

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request. Please find below the responses to your questions

Does your fire service have 51mm hoses available as part of its arsenal to fight fires?

Shropshire FRS does not use or have 51mm hose as part of its arsenal to fight fires, we only use 45mm & 70mm.

If not, why?

Shropshire FRS is a predominantly rural county with only 3 buildings in county that are classed as High Rise (they are each just 18m high). The cost of changing to 51mm hose across the county and retrofitting all appliance stowage to accommodate different size hose was not considered cost effective to the public purse for what was considered minimal operational benefit. Coupled with this, the statistics showed that the numbers of fires attended at these 3 buildings were low or zero.
