Fire crews were called to reports of a property fire Park Lane, Woodside, Telford with persons unaccounted at 0715 hours Friday 26th October. Three appliances (Fire Engines) were mobilised to the incident from Telford and Tweedale. On arrival crews were confronted with a bungalow that was well alight. Breathing apparatus teams with hose reel jets were committed into the building to try and locate the 2 persons who were reported as missing by neighbours. Crews managed to locate and rescue a lady in her 80's before being forced to withdraw from the building as the roof collapsed. Crews were then re committed back into the building in the aftermath of the collapse to look for the remaining missing person. Following this additional search, crews found a body in the property which was pronounced as deceased at the scene. The fire has subsequently been brought under control with crews remaining on scene to damp down hot spots and to support Fire Investigation and Police Forensics. The early indications are that this fire is not suspicious however this is only a preliminary finding. SFRS wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family of those involved in this tragic incident. Community Fire Safety guidance and reassurance work will be carried out in the area throughout the weekend. We hope that the public are not alarmed by our presence and will engage with us so we can discuss their safety in the home. We will be asking people if they have working smoke alarms, an escape plan in the event of a fire or if they know of anybody vulnerable that we can help? If you have any safety concerns please call 01743 260200.

Smoke alarms cost as little as £5 and are available at most DIY stores. It is recommended that smoke alarms should be fitted on the ceiling one per floor and they should be 30cm away from walls or light fittings (Usually top and bottom of stairs). Smoke alarms should be tested weekly by pressing the button to briefly activate the alarm. Change the battery once a year (unless it's a ten year alarm) and gently vacuum the alarm twice a year to remove dust from the sensors.
