A team from Newport High School has won the 2006 Be Cool Be Safe fire safety quiz organised by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The all girl team beat seven other Shropshire schools to the title at the grand final held at Telford fire station on Tuesday, April 25th. They were the overall winners from a total of 34 county schools which originally took part in regional heats held across the county in March.
Thousands of year 7 pupils from Shropshire have taken part in learning a host of information on all aspects of safety ranging from fire safety in the home, fireworks and bonfires, arson and hoax calls. They also learn about solvent abuse, bullying, stranger danger, and safety involving cycling, water and traffic.
"The overall objective of the quiz is to educate young people to become responsible citizens. The subject matter encompasses a range of safety issues from our partners such as the road safety team, Her Majesty's Coastguard, the Police, local drugs workers, Rail track and Connexions," said a spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The event has been backed by Community Safety Partnerships at Telford & Wrekin and Shrewsbury & Atcham councils.
At the final the team from Newport were fired up to answer a series of questions on all round health and safety.
"At Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service we are working to prevent accidents from happening. That is the serious message behind the quiz," added the spokesman.
"It is exciting and fun for pupils and gets important lifesaving educational messages across to 11 and 12-year-olds in an interactive style. They take the safety messages home and educate their parents about what they have learned."
The event culminates in two post quiz parties on May 8 and 10 in Telford and Shrewsbury.
