Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service launches Christmas safety campaign

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service making Shropshire safer over Christmas with social media campaign

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are set to launch a 12 Days of Christmas social media campaign raising awareness of risks during the festive period.

Starting on Sunday, December 13, topics such as road safety, business advice and candle safety guidance will be covered in the run up to Christmas.

Jon Temple, Head of Protection and Prevention, the teams that support businesses and residents, said “We are aware that Christmas will be slightly different for everyone this year, but a lot of the risks we face remain the same.

“Last year for example, we saw a rise of 17% in the number of accidental fires in people’s homes, with the top two causes being cooking or faulty appliances. With a lot of cooking taking place around this time, and new electrical appliances being purchased, it is an important time to make people aware of our safety messages.

“Businesses have also had to adapt the way they work over Christmas, not just because of COVID-19, but because of increased demand.

“We want business owners to be aware of what they need to put in place around this time. We simply want to highlight safety advice to ensure everyone can enjoy Christmas as safely as possible.”

As well as the social media campaign across Twitter and Facebook, the Service’s outreach vehicle will be attending locations throughout the County in the build up to Christmas.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Prevention team are also continuing to carry out Safe and Well visits virtually, a recently introduced method helping to reach more people at risk in Shropshire whilst maintaining guidance around COVID-19.

The visits are carried out for people who fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • Aged over 75-years of age
  • Disabled
  • Long term sick
  • Have a vulnerability

The Protection team are also able to work virtually with business owners to complete audits and inspections. These visits are continuing throughout the Christmas period during office working hours.
