Fire Service Christmas Festival of Carols

8th December, 2008 to 1st January, 1970

Location:

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is celebrating its 60th anniversary at the Brigade’s annual Christmas Festival of Carols on December 8.

Guests of honour at their diamond jubilee celebration at St Mary’s Church, Bridgnorth, will be the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, High Sheriff, church leaders, council dignitaries and members of the Shropshire and Wrekin Fire Authority.

They will join fire chiefs and firefighters from across the county along with members of the public to celebrate the anniversary of Shropshire’s firefighting service.

Children from Bridgnorth Endowed School’s choir and band will join voices with St Mary’s Church choristers to sing carols led by school music teacher Gill Baker and organist and choirmaster Dr John Turnock.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service – along with other UK brigades – was created in 1948 amalgamating small brigades from towns and boroughs across the county.

“All the fire services as we know them today were formed in 1948 at the end of the Second World War. Our annual Carol service will mark the diamond jubilee year celebrating the coming of Christmas and 60 years of serving the Shropshire community,” said Chief Fire Officer Alan Taylor.

The service will include a reading from Much Wenlock actress Gabrielle Drake.

The fund raising event will also raise money for St Mary’s Church fund, the Firefighters Charity and Asthma UK.

Guests will enjoy refreshments at the nearby Castle Hall after the 7pm service.
