Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were called this morning at approximately 06:00 to a fire in one of the turbines at Buildwas Power Station. 6 fire engines are at the scene dealing with a fire in one of the bearings of the main electricity generating turbines. The fire is contained within the turbines inside one of the main generating halls. The fire service are working with the onsite engineers and have deployed teams of firefighters in Breathing Apparatus to protect them from the smoke and are extinguishing the fire using 3 main jets. Firefighting was delayed for a period whilst the site engineers turned the turbine generating electricity off, to allow water to be applied to the fire. Also in attendance at the fire is the joint Environment Agency and Fire Service environmental pod standing by in case water from the fire is in danger of reaching the River Severn nearby. Controls are in place to prevent this.
