At 07:05 this morning on the 16th March 2014 SFRS Fire Control received a call reporting a fire at a house in Broadway, Shifnal.
Initially Two fire appliances including an officer from Telford were mobilised, with the first appliance arriving at the scene within five minutes.
On arrival, firefighters were confronted by smoke issuing from the first floor windows of a brick built two storey terraced property.
Specialist trained firefighters made an assessment of the risks and severity of the fire before entering the property wearing breathing apparatus using a thermal imaging camera, hose reels and a main jet to tackle the blaze. Gas and electrical supplies were isolated.
At the height of the incident there were approx 20 fire fighters in attendance. The Aerial Ladder Platform from Shrewsbury was used to access the roof space and to ensure the fire had not spread into neighboring properties.
To offer some support the Fire and Emergency Support Service vehicle (FESS) was also mobilised to this incident – this is run by British Red Cross volunteers. They were able to offer the occupiers blankets, a warm place to sit and some support and comfort following the serious fire that had left their home uninhabitable.
One young male adult sustained minor burns which were treated by West Midlands Ambulance Service at the scene and then taken to Hospital.
Fire Investigation Officer Station Manager Jon Temple: “The Investigation is currently on-going. Fire investigation is focusing in the first floor bedroom where it is believed the fire started. The fire spread rapidly throughout the property creating extensive fire and smoke damage. This incident highlights the need for working smoke detectors in your home. Thankfully the sleeping occupiers were alerted early enough for them to exit their home safely.”

Crews have now left the incident after being in attendance for most of the day, damping down and cutting away and also salvaging some of the occupier’s belongings. They will return later to carry out a re-inspection.
Safety Message:
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service would advise all householders to have working smoke alarms in their property that are tested weekly.
