At 11:00am this morning the 31st of March 2014, SFRS Fire Control received a call reporting a fire at a Farm in Hookagate near Shrewsbury. 2 fire appliances including an Officer from Shrewsbury were mobilised, with the first appliance arriving on the scene within 8 minutes. On arrival, firefighters were confronted by a single storey farm building of metal construction housing a grain dryer that was on fire. Incident Commander Maguire made up for 1 additional fire engine and also the Light Pumping Unit that would supply them with more water from a nearby large pond. Crews rapidly got to work, with 2 fire-fighters wearing breathing apparatus using hose reels and a covering jet to tackle the blaze. The fire was brought under control by 12:30, although fire-fighters were still cutting away and using thermal imaging cameras and tools to dismantle the grain dryer to make sure that it would not re-ignite. Quote from officer in charge Station Manager Guy Williams who took charge of the incident at an early stage said: β€œIt was vital that we confined the fire to the grain dryer and did not allow it to spread to the rest of the building and its contents. Due to the technical nature of the fire, crews had to be patient and dismantle sections bit by bit before they could tackle the fire. This type of incident is a very time consuming incident and we will not be leaving the scene until we are completely satisfied the fire is out and not likely to re-ignite. β€œ Current situation At 15:45 – 2 Fire Engines are still in attendance at the incident, cutting away at the grain dryer and dismantling it to avoid any hotspots re-igniting.
