At 1134 hours Thursday 24th July Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service Fire Control were notified by West Midlands Ambulance Service of a property fire in, Donnington, Telford. Two fire appliances from Wellington and one from Tweedale were mobilised to the incident. When the fire crews arrived a team of two breathing apparatus wearers were committed into the building with a hose reel jet for the purposes of fighting the fire. The crew ascertained that the fire had burnt itself out and carried out ventilation activities to clear the smoke, unfortunately a female in her 70’s and a dog were pronounced dead at the scene. Fire Investigation Officers are currently working with Police and Scenes of Crime Officers to establish the cause of this fire, however the fire is not believed to be suspicious. Any witnesses should contact West Mercia Police on 101 or 0300 333 3000. Fire Crews will be in the area for the remainder of the day giving fire safety advice to the local community. Station Manager Guy Williams from The Safety in the Home Team at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service requested that people in the County make sure they have working smoke alarms in their properties. “It is absolutely imperative that you have a working smoke alarms in your house, these alarms save lives. Please take a few minutes to check that you, your relatives and friends have smoke alarms and test them to see that they are working.
