Rented property? Does it have smoke alarms?
From 1st October 2015, new legislation will mean all landlords are responsible for fitting smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their rented properties. We are offering free smoke detectors to landlords.
The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015 is to come into effect from the 1st October 2015. Landlords responsibilites include:
- Ensuring a smoke alarm is equipped on each storey of the premises.
- A carbon monoxide detector is equipped in any room of the premises which contains a solid fuel burning combustion appliance.
- To check the detectors are in proper working order on the day the tenancy begins if it is a new tenancy.

Landlords will first need to ring Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service’s (SFRS) headquarters to request an information pack and complete a questionnaire. To find out where and when their nearest alarm collection is, landlords should ring SFRS headquarters on 01743 260200.
Tenants responsibilities:
To ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are tested weekly and to report any damage or fault to your landlord/agency.
