Behind our 500+ firefighters is talented team of support staff who provide the Service with a range of expertise and skills in professional, technical, planning and administrative support services.

Fire Safety
This directorate comprises two departments:
Business Fire Safety - This department focusses on the enforcement and promotion of fire safety legislation and regulations in the workplace and public locations. The team provides businesses with guidance and advice on fire safety and regulatory issues.
Community Fire Safety - This department focusses on the promotion of fire safety in the home and community. It also works with local councils and other organisations to provide “Safe & Well” visits aimed at supporting vulnerable people. The team also deals with arson, anti-social behaviour, road and water safety campaigns and issues.
Support Staff Roles
Administration Support - Provides a wide range of administration services across all departments.
ICT – This team manages and provides 24/7 technical support for the Service’s IT systems across the Service’s locations, including its 23 fire stations.
Human Resources – Responsible for all employment and staff welfare issues and recruitment campaigns and processes.
Planning & Performance – This team leads on the development of new processes and procedures that help ensure we provide Shropshire with a modern fire and rescue service.
Resources & Workshops – Responsible for ensuring that our firefighters and support staff have the equipment they need to do their jobs as well as possible. The workshops team maintain our varied fleet of vehicles, including fire fighting appliances.

Selection process for support staff vacancies
The selection process will include completion of an online application form, any job-related selection tests and an interview. All applicants will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire prior to appointment and a DBS check and Police vetting may be required prior to taking up a post.
All appointments are made subject to a 6-month probationary period. All staff have a minimum of 23 days annual leave, plus normal bank/public holidays. The majority of support staff work on a “flexi-time” system. Membership of the local government pension scheme is also open to all support staff.
