WM Chris White said: "A 20 year old female was alerted to the fire in the ground floor kitchen by smoke detectors correctly located within the property, but was forced to make her escape through her first floor bedroom window due to smoke entering her bedroom. Although the working smoke detectors have prevented a much more serious outcome, smoke from the fire was able to travel from the fire throughout the property due to all of the internal doors being left open. Not only has the presence of smoke throughout the property prevented the occupant from making a safe escape through the front door, it has also caused significant smoke damage to every other room in the property. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind the public to be aware of potential hazards from fire within their home and take appropriate actions to minimise these risks and would urge the public to accept the offer of a free Home Fire Safety Visit. What is a Home Fire Safety Visit? The purpose of the visit is to ensure that you are aware of potential hazards within the home and can take appropriate actions. The visit is not to judge your lifestyle, but to keep you safe from fire. What will we do? Arrange a convenient time to visit Talk about the main causes of fire in the home Test smoke alarms Discuss points to consider when making a home fire escape plan Give advice on the action to be taken in the event of a fire. To book your free home fire safety visit, please call 01743 260 260 or for further advice and assistance contact the Safety in the Home Team. - See more at: http://www.shropshirefire.gov.uk/safety-home/home-fire-safety-check.
