Scaling Snowdon with a Ladder

Shropshire firefighters put up a ladder at the peak of the highest mountain in Wales today as part of a marathon charity event.

A nine strong crew from Shrewsbury Fire Station scaled the heights of Snowdon today(May 8th) setting off from the Llanberis Pass starting point at 9am.

They carried the heavy and cumbersome 5.4m double extension ladder, which stretches to nine metres, a total of 1,085 metres (3,560ft) to the top for a photo opportunity with a difference before triumphantly lugging it all the way back down again.

Firefighters’ Memorial Day Tribute

Shropshire firefighters paraded in front of their fire stations to mark the first annual Firefighters Memorial Day to remember the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters who died in the line of duty.

With flags at half mast, firefighters from wholetime fire stations at Telford, Wellington and Shrewsbury observed a minute’s silence along with colleagues from across the UK.

Officers in charge read out the Firefighters' Prayer written in the last century by an unknown author in the ceremonies held at midday on Thursday, May 4th this week. (see prayer below) (document attached)

It may be a tall order but Shropshire firefighters plan to put up a ladder at the peak of the highest mountain in Wales as part of a marathon charity event.

First, they have to carry it 1,085 metres (3,560ft) to the top and back again.

A total of eight firefighters from Shrewsbury Fire Station’s Red Watch plan to scale the heights of Snowdon on May 8 setting off from the Llanberis Pass starting point at 8.30am.

Firefighters' Memorial Day

Shropshire firefighters from fire stations at Telford Central, Wellington, Shrewsbury and Market Drayton will parade in front of their fire stations at midday on Thursday, May 4th, to mark the first annual Firefighters Memorial Day.

The Longest Game...of Rugby

A Bridgnorth firefighter is among a team of UK sportsmen aiming to tackle a world beating challenge to play the longest ever game of rugby.

Firefighter Luke Veal and colleagues from across the UK will play a full contact Rugby Union match in Worcester aiming to raise £23,000 for the Fire Fighters’ Charity.

With the current Guiness World Record standing at 28hrs and 23 mns, it promises to be a long drawn out game, especially for the spectators.

Whitchurch Firefighter Retires

 

A firefighter who is one of three generations of the same family to serve at Whitchurch Fire Station is to retire at the end of March after a 37 year career with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Postman Graham Field (55) was inspired to join the fire service as an on call firefighter to follow in the footsteps of his father Eric who had a 23 year firefighting career.

His son Matt also joined 11 years ago.

Skin Cream Fire Danger

 

A senior Shropshire fire officer has called for people to be aware of the fire danger from skin creams containing paraffin.

Care homes in the county must also take steps to reduce the risk to people in residential care, says Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Guy Williams, in charge of fire prevention and protection in the county, said there had been no incidents in Shropshire despite 37 reported deaths in England since 2010.

Shropshire's Arson Campaign

 

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is appealing for the public’s help to join the fight against criminals who deliberately set fires in the county as part of Arson Awareness Week.

“Fire crime” can have devastating effects with sometimes serious consequences and added cost to the public purse, said Guy Williams, Group Manager in charge of Prevention and Protection for the county.

He is appealing to people to help prevent arson by putting bins out of sight and away from property, not leaving skips full of rubbish and reporting flytips to councils.

Arson: Don't accept it, report it

This year Arson Awareness Week, begins Monday 20th March Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, together with the Arson Prevention Forum, are calling on everyone to play their part in tackling fire-crime. 

“Arson accounts for almost half of all fires attended by the fire and rescue services and can have devastating effects in terms of its cost and consequences,” says Lee Howell, the Forum’s Independent Chairman.

Shropshire Firefighter in UK Rugby Call Up

 

With rugby hitting the headlines with thrilling matches in the Six Nations, the sport has also gained accolades in Shropshire with a county firefighter being picked for the national fire service squad.

While England thumped Scotland to seal the Six Nations title, George Jacks, an on-call firefighter based at Ludlow Fire Station, helped his team to victory in his first match against the English police team.
