From chef to company director to care workers …all newly qualified firefighters

A chef, company director, mine geologist and a supermarket baker are among the latest “on call” firefighter recruits to pass out from basic training with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

They join a total of 21 newly trained retained firefighters with a variety of jobs including an accountant, security officer, landscape gardener, factory worker, farmer, welder, fire control operator, gym instructor, waiter, café worker, special needs and care workers.

Firefighter Sam’s real life rescue

Shropshire firefighters put their lives “on the line” for his sister – and in return Sam Smith has now joined their ranks and become a retained firefighter at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Sam was just 18-years-old when he was forced to jump out of a top floor bedroom window as fire rampaged through his Shrewsbury home. He broke his back in the fall and probably would not have survived if he hadn’t jumped.

Further warnings about Rural Roads

The Safer Roads Partnership and West Mercia Police are reminding motorists of the dangers that may be present during this time of year as farmers are using the roads more when harvesting and moving their produce.

Agriculture is one of Shropshire’s major industries and harvesting a wide variety of crops at this time of the year sees an increase in agricultural vehicle movements on the road and also an increased potential for road collisions.

Police appeal over Oswestry bin arson

Police in Oswestry have appealed for witnesses after an industrial-sized wheelie bin was set alight in an arson attack.

The bin was in a caged area in the rear courtyard of a block of flats in Castlefields and was some distance from the building itself.

Officers were informed by Shropshire Fire and Rescue just after 1am on Thursday 11th October 2012, after the fire was alerted by a member of the public.

Fundraisers aid Romania

Shropshire fundraisers who collected more than £10,000 to fund a county charity mission to send much needed fire engines to Romania have been praised for their efforts by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Hundreds of people from across the county held car washes, cake sales, dress down days and auctions while sports clubs held bucket collections to raise the cash which will send four fire engines and a team of 14 volunteers to Romania next week.

Their efforts will help replace “outmoded and cumbersome” equipment and “save lives.”

Floods in Shropshire

Shropshire firefighters are well prepared for more calls in the wake of further flooding after experiencing one of their busiest days of the year.

Fire control in Shrewsbury was bombarded with calls on Monday as firefighters from across the county dealt with incidents ranging from people trapped in cars, elderly residents needing to be freed from their homes and numerous animal rescues.

Shropshire fire fighters in charity car wash

Shropshire firefighters promise a fast response as always – especially when they clean cars on behalf of the national Fire Fighters Charity on Saturday, September 29th.

Fire crews will be out across the county for the National Car Wash 2012 event – the charity’s largest fundraising event of the year to raise money for injured firefighters.

Surface floods and driving advice for motorists

With the recent heavy rain, motorists across West Mercia are being warned about the dangers of attempting to drive through standing water. Some areas throughout the region are suffering from localised flooding following persistent rain overnight and the Met Office is still advising people within the Midlands area to ‘be prepared’ with further rainfall falling throughout today.
