Sir Ken Knight visited Shropshire today to carry out a spending review at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service which has already slashed £4.5 million from its £20 million annual budget.

Chief Fire Officer Paul Raymond told the newly retired Government Chief Fire & Rescue Advisor during his visit today (February 12) that it was “almost impossible” to make another £1 million in demanded cuts without an “increased risk” to the people of Shropshire.

Shropshire business owners should not be complacent about the risk of fires after the death of 233 people in a blaze at the nightclub in South America’s largest capital city.

Suspicious fire at motorcycle breakers

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to a garage fire at 2.54am Tuesday 29th January 2012 at the Lostboys Motorcycle Breakers in Beverley Road, Ketley.

A number of motorbikes were destroyed in the fire.

The fire is being investigated and appears to have been started deliberately.

If anyone has any information about the fire they are asked to contact West Mercia Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Chimney fires up as cold weather strikes

Chimney fires are on the increase in Shropshire as householders continue to ignore warnings to get their chimney swept.

As temperatures plunge, more home owners turn to open fires and wood burners to stay warm - leading to 28 fires in the first 28 days of January. There were 14 recorded chimney fires in January 2012 - half of this year's incidents.

Firefighters from across the county have been turning out to deal with incidents involving log burners, Rayburns and open fires.

Deliberate barn fire

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are asking rural communities to be vigilant following a barn fire at Sparchley Farm, Culmington, near Ludlow. The cause of the fire has been confirmed as deliberate following the report of the fire at 8.54pm on Monday 21st January 2013. Crews from Craven Arms, Ludlow, Clun and Shrewsbury attended the scene.

Motorists warned to take care on icy roads

The Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia is reminding motorists to continue to take extra care on the roads over the next few days as temperatures stay low and many roads remain icy and slippery. The Met Office has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning of ice for Tuesday (22nd January). As temperatures fall below freezing overnight, icy stretches are likely on untreated surfaces – especially in areas where any further sleet, snow or rain has fallen.

Coroner says many people are unaware of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning

A coroner who recorded a verdict of accidental death on a teenage girl who died in a camping tragedy in Shropshire told members of her family:

“It’s quite clear that you and many, many people were unaware of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

“The risk you were addressing when you brought that barbecue in, in its dying embers, was against fire, said Coroner Mr John Ellery.

“That was a risk you acted against, but sadly what was happening was that carbon monoxide was coming from those embers.
