Appeal for vigilance following Telford fires

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are asking Telford residents to be vigilant after three recent property fires where on two occasions rubbish was set on fire and a third incident where a sofa was set alight.

The first incident occurred at an empty property in Southgate at 12:07am Saturday 12th May 2012 where rubbish at the front of the property was set alight and caused damage to the gas and electric box and facia of the building.

New speed enforcement site on A458 Ford

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia is launching a new mobile speed enforcement site on the A458 in Ford, Shropshire, following concerns raised by the local community about the speeds of drivers along the 40mph road.

The new site, which launches at the end of the month, forms part of the Safer Roads Partnership’s Community Concern programme, which responds to community requests for speed enforcement. Local residents have raised concern and asked for action to be taken to address the situation and improve the safety of the road.

Oswestry needs you

Oswestry needs new firefighters ready to turn out to answer emergency callouts in and around the town.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for men and women to join the team of skilled firefighters at Oswestry Fire Station who answer about 400 calls each year to deal with house fires, road crashes, and a wide range of other incidents.

A recruitment campaign will be held in Festival Square, Oswestry, on Saturday, June 9 from 9.30am to 4pm when anyone interested can talk to firefighters.

Touring theatre show to highlight criminality

The issues of illegal money lending and arson are being highlighted in a touring performance, heading to local schools.

The England Illegal Money Lending Team are working in partnership with Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin Trading Standards, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and Zip Theatre to deliver the production ‘Sparx’, by Jon Lingard-Lane, which is partly funded using proceeds of crime money taken from convicted loan sharks.

Fire Service Awards

Long Service and Good Conduct Medals have been presented to 11 Shropshire firefighters and a member of the support staff at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire after completing 20 years service.

“They have dedicated their lives to assisting Shropshire people and on behalf of them I want to thank you very sincerely. You have never let us down when turning out to homes, rivers or car crashes. When we need help, you will be there,” said Algernon Heber-Percy.

Shropshire couple praised for charity work after tragedy

A Bridgnorth firefighter who “worked tirelessly” with his wife to raise £35,000 for charity after the death of their toddler son has won a top award.

Ashley and Gemma Brown raised the money for Asthma UK after their two-year-old son Cameron tragically died from the illness.

The couple aimed to raise £25,000 for the national charity with the launch of Cameron’s Fund but beat their target due to “their complete dedication” to the cause and positive response after their personal loss, said Chris Metcalfe, of Telent.

Top award for lifesaving Newport firefighter

A Newport firefighter who launched a successful campaign to educate teenagers in driver safety after a high number of student deaths in road crashes has won the High Sheriff’s Good Citizen Award.
There was a “dramatic reduction” in the number of road traffic collisions as a result of the work of Martin Richardson at Harper Adams Agricultural University.

Firefighters for 80 years

Two Shropshire firefighters with joint firefighting careers spanning 80 years have been honoured for their long service.

Retired postman Peter Langford and ex-soldier David Warwick both joined Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service as retained firefighters in 1972.

They were both presented with their 40 years service award by Stuart West, chairman of Shropshire and Wrekin Fire Authority, at a ceremony held at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn last night (Wednesday).
