Firefighters for 80 years

Two Shropshire firefighters with joint firefighting careers spanning 80 years have been honoured for their long service.

Retired postman Peter Langford and ex-soldier David Warwick both joined Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service as retained firefighters in 1972.

They were both presented with their 40 years service award by Stuart West, chairman of Shropshire and Wrekin Fire Authority, at a ceremony held at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn last night (Wednesday).

Floods and Driving advice for motorists

With the recent heavy rain and localised flooding, motorists across West Mercia are being warned about the dangers of attempting to drive through flood water. The Environment Agency still has a number of Flood Warnings in place covering areas within West Mercia, together with a number of flood alerts indicating a chance of localised flooding.

County fire quiz winners

A total of nine Shropshire schools were in the final of this year’s fire safety quiz run by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Teams of four pupils representing their school were at Telford Central Fire Station for the final after winning through regional heats involving schools from across the county.

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of year 7 pupils from 39 schools have been researching facts, figures and expert advice about fire safety and general safety compiled into a “Be Cool Be Safe” magazine ready for the popular annual quiz.

Home fire safety talks

How to identify those at risk and how to prevent a fire in the home is part of a new fire safety campaign being launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service aimed at community group representatives.

A public meeting will be held at Ludlow fire station on April 17 and at Oswestry Fire Station on April 26 when fire officers will inform people about the availability of free home fire safety checks and free smoke detectors for elderly and vulnerable residents.

Chemical training for Shropshire firefighters

Shropshire firefighters in chemical protection suits dealt with suspect waste leaking from drums dumped at a county airfield – but it was just a regular training exercise for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire crews from across the county were called to Prees Heath Airfield at 7pm last night (Thursday) in a reconstruction carried out to ensure that the emergency services are prepared for any incident.

Man charged with eight counts of arson

Police in Telford have this morning confirmed that a 22-year-old man has been charged with eight counts of arson overnight and will now be appearing at Telford Magistrates Court this morning.

The man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in connection with the series of arson attacks on motor vehicles that have occurred in Leegomery and Hadley over the course of the past three weeks.

In more detail the man has been charged with seven counts of arson and one count of arson, recklessly endangering life.

Top firm helps train firefighters

A leading Bridgnorth business has been praised for lending out its premises to help train county firefighters.

More than 100 firefighters have taken part in “vital” training exercises at Bridgnorth Aluminium which employs 230 at its 64 acre site.

Senior fire officer Andy Perry presented the firm with framed images and an employers’ plaque to thank them for their “priceless” support.

“We are limited to where we can train in realistic conditions so it is good when we get an employer such as Bridgnorth Aluminium allowing us to use their site.

Ride for Life 2012

The Shropshire Motorcycle Road Safety Group, of which Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is a partner, attended the Ride 4 Life event at the Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford on Sunday April 1^st.

Almost 1,000 bikers from across the Midlands took part in the Bike 4 Life Easter Egg Run in aid of two local charities. Raising money for the Midlands Air Ambulance and Royal Air Force Museum, bikers traveled en- mass from Shrewsbury Meole Brace car park and rode along the M54 to Cosford. The day was a huge success which raised over £5,000 for charity.

Busy training night at Ludlow Fire Station

Ludlow Fire Station was a hive of activity at a recent training night which saw 3 appliances, the Environmental Pod and a ranger with crews from four RDS stations taking part in two training exercises which were running at the same time.

Crews from Ludlow and Albrighton took part in a Hazardous Materials Exercise which involved dealing with a simulated chemical spill and then being decontaminated, they were supported by a crew from Tweedale who operated the decontamination unit which is housed on the Environment pod. The drill was supported by an associate trainer.

Newport needs you

Newport needs new firefighters ready to turn out to answer emergency callouts in and around the town.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for men and women to join the team of skilled firefighters at Newport Fire Station who answer about 150 calls each year to deal with house fires, road crashes, and a wide range of other incidents.

A recruitment morning is being held at the Salters Lane station on Saturday, April 14 from 9am to 1pm with the aim of recruiting new retained fire fighters for the town.
