Fire crews in hospital training exercise

A firefighter training exercise at a Shrewsbury hospital has rekindled memories of a fire tragedy from the 1960's.

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus to run into Shelton Hospital to rescue people reported trapped – but it was purely a training exercise for fire crews from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

But in a remarkable co-incidence it mirrored a real incident which happened at the same hospital in 1968 when 24 women died in a huge blaze in one of the hospital wings.

Age Action Alliance - Coming together to improve the lives of older people

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is now a partner in the Age Action Alliance along with dozens of organisations from across the voluntary, private and public sectors who are coming together to celebrate the lives of older people and address the challenges of our ageing society.

The Age Action Alliance was launched on the 30 September to coincide with Older People’s Day celebrations and will work together to improve the lives of older people and help transform communities into better places to grow older.

Fire crews in hospital training exercise

A major training exercise will be launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service at Shelton Hospital, Shrewsbury, next week.

Firefighters from Shrewsbury, Minsterley, Bishops Castle and Baschurch will react to an emergency call reporting a major fire at an accommodation block at Shelton Hospital with people reported missing.

Firefighters in animal rescue training at a Shropshire farm

Shropshire firefighters are learning how to handle animals at a Shropshire farm to help them carry out animal rescues in the county.

Farm animals, including bulls and cows, are rescued by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service after becoming trapped on farmland while horses and a variety of other animals including geese, ducks, sheep and dogs can also find themselves in need of help from fire crews.

“It's important that firefighters know exactly how to behave around animals when we are called to a rescue,” said Andy Griffiths, an Assistant Group Commander based at Wellington.

Drive Drink free this Christmas

The Safer Roads Partnership are today warning people of the dangers of drink driving during the festive period. With the season of festivities now underway the Partnership, together with West Mercia Police and other agencies, will be raising awareness of the consequences of drinking and driving.

The Partnership will be joining forces with other partnerships, local authorities and police forces across the Midlands region to launch a huge publicity campaign to raise awareness of the issues.

Sainsbury’s switched on to fire safety

A Christmas fire safety initiative was launched in the Sainsbury’s store in Telford town centre with the help of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Staff focussed on a week of fire safety checks and training in the vital run up to Christmas – traditionally the busiest time for stores.

Community fire safety officers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service gave advice to shoppers on winter fire safety and the importance of checking smoke alarms regularly. Shoppers were also able to book a home fire safety visit to get advice in their own homes.

Smoke alarm campaign

A Shropshire pensioner’s help to publicise a campaign by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service to get every county home to have a smoke alarm is soon to spread nationwide.

Retired schoolteacher Margaret Leverett (63) urged every householder to get a smoke alarm installed after her century old family home at Tibberton, near Newport, was seriously damaged by fire.

Now the Government’s Fire Kills campaign wants to feature Margaret’s story in their national fire safety campaign.

Memorial motorbike ride benefits two charities

A charity motorcycle ride to the Welsh coast has raised £2,200 in memory of a young Shropshire firefighter who died in the Isle of Man last year.

A total of 150 motorbike riders set off from Pontesbury to Aberystwyth on the Mat Evans Memorial Motorcycle Ride in July in a celebration of his life.

They set off from the Plough Garage in Pontesbury, where Mat worked, and after the round trip returned to the Plough Inn at Pontesbury for a BBQ and live music.
