Oswestry firefighters rescue trapped pet

Shropshire firefighters were called out to rescue a dog trapped down a rabbit hole just weeks after getting to the finals of the national Dogs Trust Honours 2011 for a similar animal rescue.

This time it took Oswestry firefighters a relatively short time to free Jake the Jack Russell trapped a metre down a rabbit hole at Weston Rhyn.

Their colleagues had worked tirelessly for three hours to save another dog called Cookie trapped in a myriad of underground rabbit holes near Shrewsbury earlier this year.

Farm fires warning in Shropshire

Shrewsbury and north Shropshire farmers are urged to be aware of fire risks at harvest time and also take steps to help prevent arson. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and the NFU have issued advice to farmers and growers to avoid costly farm fires around the county - including Shrewsbury and north Shropshire which has suffered the highest number of farm fires in the county. Around 1,600 farm buildings and thousands of acres of land and crops are destroyed by accidental and deliberate fires in the UK each year.

Chimney fires warning

Householders with chimneys must have them swept to avert a blaze, warned community fire safety officers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Last year fires from chimneys were on the increase in Shropshire as people used unseasoned wood causing sap to stick to the chimney sides and set on fire.

Two cars damaged in Shrewsbury arson attack

Police in Shrewsbury today issued a witness appeal following an arson attack in which £19,000 damage was caused to two cars in a pub car park.

The incident happened at around 10pm Sunday 7th August 2011, at the back of the Albion Vaults pub just off Chester Street.

Police Constable Lee Saunders, the investigating officer, said today: "Two young males with slim builds, wearing black hooded tops, were seen running away from the location towards Coton Hill at the time of the fire.

Minsterley fire station open day

An open day will be held on August 21 for people to view Minsterley fire station after an upgrade.

Firefighters will be on hand to show the public how they train, their equipment and give a tour through the newly refurbished station.

An eye opening chip pan blaze will be recreated to show the dangers of not using thermostatically controlled pans. Firefighters are still called out to kitchen fires from old fashioned open chip pans caused by people who fall asleep while cooking.

Police appeal over Shrewsbury business arson

Police are investigating an arson attack on a joinery workshop near Shrewsbury which caused up to £400,000 damage.

They issued an appeal today for information following the fire at Niblett Bespoke Joinery based at Edgebold, near Hanwood.

The business shares the old dairy depot site with several other firms alongside the A488, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 01.54am 1st August 2011.

Arsonist sentenced to imprisonment

On Thursday 14th July a Highley man was handed an intermediate sentence for public protection of which he must serve at least 577 days before even being considered for release at Shrewsbury Crown Court after admitting Arson at Highley Rugby Club on 9th February 2011.

The rugby club changing room and storage building was completely destroyed by the arson attack; the male was arrested at the scene by police officers.

Derek Taylor and Kate Hancocks from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service Risk Reduction Team have taken part in “Prison! Me! No-Way!” workshops at Marches School and Technology College, Oswestry on 21st June 2001 and Wrockwardine Wood Arts College 14th July2011, together with West Mercia Police, drugs workers and prison officers.

Fire safety in the home – teach your children prevention is officer Charlie’s advice

Teach children about fire safety – that is the vital message from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Children and young people need to know exactly what to do if fire breaks out in their home, said Community Fire Safety officer Charlie Cartwright.

They must also know how to take sensible precautions to prevent a blaze, he said.

“There’s nothing more important than the safety of a child in the home. Get into the habit of taking a quick glance around a room for hazards to make safety an automatic reflex and for peace of mind.

Police welcome prison sentence on Shrewsbury arsonist

Police who investigated a spate of fires on a Shrewsbury housing estate, today welcomed the prison sentence given to a 19-year-old arsonist.

Matthew Robin Gill was jailed for four years at Stafford Crown Court after admitting arson with intent to endanger life at a home in Reedham Road, Herongate on December 1 last year.

He further admitted giving a false alarm of a fire to Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service on October 21, receiving a three month sentence to run concurrently Gill was also given a further three months, running concurrently, for breaching a community order.
