Child Safety Week

Teach children about fire safety – that is the vital message from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Children and young people need to know exactly what to do if fire breaks out in their home, said Community Fire Safety officer Charlie Cartwright.

They must also know how to take sensible precautions to prevent a blaze, he said.

“There’s nothing more important than the safety of a child in the home. Get into the habit of taking a quick glance around the room for hazards to make safety an automatic reflex and for peace of mind.

Brookside Safety Roadshow

Residents of a Telford estate are being urged to attend a safety roadshow run by the emergency services and The Wrekin Housing Trust on Thursday.

Fire safety, anti-social behaviour and benefits system changes will be outlined to visitors to Brookside Community Centre on May 12 from 10am to 4pm.

Free home fire safety checks in which firefighters point out potential fire hazards in the home are available to residents who wish to sign up. The Shropshire brigade's Outreach vehicle will be at the event for people to ask firefighters for fire safety advice.

Oswestry house fire – police investigating

Police are investigating a deliberate attempt to set an Oswestry home on fire while four people were inside.

A senior detective appealed for information to help identify the arsonists following the incident at a house in Maple Court shortly after 1am today.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service notified the police at 1.18am they were attending the fire.
Two adults - a man and a woman - and two children aged three and a three-month-old baby, escaped without injury.

The woman suffered from the effects of smoke inhalation and was given oxygen to help her recover.

Business fire safety advice

Shropshire company bosses are being urged to attend an open day at their local fire station to get important information about their legal obligations for fire safety at business premises.

A series of two hour workshops are being held across the county in May by fire safety officers at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Appeal for information following a spate of car fires in Oswestry

West Mercia Police have launched an investigation into arson attacks on seven cars during the early hours of today (27th April). Three further incidents of criminal damage to vehicles and a burglary are also being linked.

The first incident happened at around 3.15am on 27th April when Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to a car fire in Middleton Road. This vehicle was a white MG Maestro registration number G223 UTO this had been stolen from Newton Abbot in Devon during the night of 23rd/24th April.

Fire Service Awards

Volunteers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have won a major award for their charity efforts in aid of Bulgarian orphans.

The ten strong group of firefighters, councillors and a control room operator raised more than £3,000 for three orphanages with a number of fund raising activities including the Oswestry Santa Run, a bucket collection at Shrewsbury Town FC and donations and raffles.

Appeal for vigilance following arson attacks

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are asking residents to be vigilant in the Sutton Hill area of Telford following several fires involving wheelie bins, recycling bins and bushes.

The first incident was reported at 9:46pm on Sunday 10th April 2011 in the Southgate area. On arrival the Crew from Tweedale found a fire involving a bush.

Approximately half an hour later the crew attended a second incident in the Sunnymead area, where there were three seats of fire involving wheelie bins and recycling bins.

Firefighters receive awards for rescue of elderly in serious fire

Firefighters who were “tested to the limit” when they rescued elderly residents in a serious fire at a Shropshire care home were praised for their efforts which led to everyone getting out alive.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer John Redmond also paid tribute to staff at the Extra Care home in Madeley, Telford, for their professionalism in being so well prepared for such an emergency.

Keeping Shropshire Safe

Firefighters wore chemical protection suits to investigate a leaking drum spilled from the boot of a car which ended up on its roof after a crash in a simulated training exercise involving many of Shropshire’s emergency services.

They contained the mystery chemical into a secure drum before using Shropshire's Fire Control based at Shrewsbury brigade HQ to check from the damaged label that the substance was sulphuric acid which had leaked in the accident on the A49 at Marshbrook – all part of the training exercise scenario.

Suspicious fires in Telford

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are asking residents to be vigilant in the Hollinswood area of Telford following several rubbish fires and a wheelie bin fire.

Crews from Telford central were called out to a rubbish fire in an underpass, off Duffryn at 2:26am on Sunday 20th March.

Crews were called out again last night, Monday 21st March 2011, to another rubbish fire the same location at 6:41pm, a report of a wheelie bin on fire at Downton Court, Hollinswood at 7:35pm and a further call at 8:17pm to another rubbish fire at Dunsheath, Hollinswood.
