Have Fun This Summer But Stay Safe

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued safety advice for a summer of fun and to prevent the annual increase in fires during school holidays.

To keep safe especially during this season’s heatwave, prevention staff have given out a summer fire safety list.

They are urging people not to light bonfires during the “tinder dry” conditions and to be “extra vigilant” to prevent outdoor fires.

Fire Station’s All Action Open Day

Firefighters will demonstrate their skills at an action packed open day at Telford Central Fire Station tomorrow (Saturday).

Families galore are expected at the Stafford Park station from 11am to 4pm to watch eye catching demonstrations including a chip pan bursting into flames and a series of rescue re-enactments including watching how people are cut out of a car after a road collision.

Members of the public can also see the tests that would be firefighters have to pass before joining Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and get career information.

Charity Family Fun Day

A “bigger and better” charity fun day for all the family is planned in Shrewsbury on July 29.

Organised by firefighters and police officers, the event at Shrewsbury College in London Road will be opened by the Mayor of Shrewsbury at 10am.

“We plan to make it even more successful than last year’s inaugural event which raised £700 for the Severn Hospice,” said organiser Andy Davies, of Shrewsbury Fire Station’s Blue Watch.

Hats Off to Firefighter Recruits

New firefighter recruits in Telford and Shrewsbury celebrated at a “passing out” ceremony after nine weeks of tough initial training with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Aged between 21 and 39, the ten men come from all walks of life from an insurance manager to IT specialist, technician to TV engineer, coffee shop worker to a paintball shop manager and an outdoor activity instructor.

Shropshire Firefighters Help Save Trapped Falcon

Firefighters went to the rescue of a falcon trapped on a rockface in a high rise drama in Bridgnorth.

The alarm was raised by birdwatchers who had been keeping their eye on a nesting pair of protected Peregrine Falcons in rocks in Low Town.

They had spotted the female protected bird was in distress after becoming trapped behind metal fencing put up to prevent rockfalls onto the road below.

They alerted the RSPCA which in turn called in Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service which sent a crew from Bridgnorth to the scene.

Pet Oxygen Masks Charity Event

A bring your dog to work day at Shrewsbury fire HQ has raised more than £100 for a national charity which supplies specially designed oxygen masks to firefighters to revive pets in house fires.

A dozen dogs turned up to their owners’ place of work as part of the annual pet friendly day marked each year across the UK.

Organiser Emily Hodson, a technical support officer for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The money is going to Smokey Paws, the charity that supplies animal oxygen masks for front line appliances for fire and rescue services.

Wellington Fire Station Open Day is on July 7

Wellington Appeal for More Firefighters

It’s a job that’s challenging, exciting and means you get to help the local community. That is the job description for a firefighter with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service which is looking for new recruits in Wellington.

“Being a firefighter is not like any other job. It can be unpredictable, exciting and very rewarding coupled with the satisfaction and the respect that comes with providing a crucial service to the community,” says Tony Talbot, Watch Manager at Wellington Fire Station.

Fire Risks to Elderly Living Alone

Older people who live alone in rural areas of Shropshire are most at risk of having a house fire, says Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The kitchen is the room where most fires break out and smoke alarms are key to alerting householders to the danger.

New annual figures reveal that there were 231 fires in the county in 2017/18, up seven on the previous 12 months, but the “worrying” statistic is that 90 incidents, almost 40 per cent, were in homes occupied by elderly people living alone in rural areas, says Prevention Manager Rabinder Dhami.
