Dyslexia Honours for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service

 

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has been honoured for its “trailblazing” work to support staff with dyslexia.

They were hailed as “super champions” for being proactive and supportive employers at the Dyslexia Awards 2017.

Winner of the Supportive Employer Award for more than 50 employees, they were praised by judges for having a positive impact on their staff and changing perceptions of dyslexics and dyslexia across Shropshire.

More Women Firefighters

More women from across Shropshire want to become firefighters after attending the latest taster session at a county fire station.

A total of ten toured Market Drayton fire station on Saturday to hear about how firefighting is a career choice for both men and women at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

They were shown around fire appliances, tried on fire kit for size and put on breathing apparatus under instruction from the Market Drayton crew.

Wanted: More Women Firefighters

 

More women are wanted as “on call” county firefighters in a continuing campaign being run by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

With just six per cent of female firefighters, the service wants to encourage more women to join with the latest of a series of “taster” days being held at Market Drayton Fire Station on Saturday, September 16 from 9.30am to 12.30.

Watch Manager Mark Smith says: “Once the fire kit is worn, the public don’t know which are men and women, except many tend to assume they are all males, which is wrong.

Fire Service at Fun Event

 

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting the annual Cultural Diversity Day in Shrewsbury on Saturday. (July 22nd)

Live music, dance displays, workshops and stalls will entertain shoppers and visitors in The Square from midday to 4pm as part of the celebrations.

Staff from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service will join other county organisations at the event and highlight the work they do in equality and diversity, anti-discrimination, human rights and hate crime.

Wanted - More Women Firefighter Recruits

 

Women interested in a career as firefighters’ attended a successful taster session at Oswestry Fire Station aimed at encouraging more to join Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

During the session they toured the fire station, checked out the equipment aboard fire appliances, tried on fire kit and experienced wearing breathing apparatus under instruction from firefighters.

Call for More Women Firefighters

 

More women are wanted to train as on call firefighters by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service which is holding another “taster day” just for women on June 17.

Women who live within five minutes of one of Shropshire’s 23 fire stations are invited to attend the session at Oswestry Fire Station from 9.30am to 12.30 to see what life is like as a firefighter.

There are currently vacancies for on call firefighters at stations in Baschurch, Church Stretton, Clun, Bishops Castle, Oswestry and Minsterley but recruits are constantly needed at all of the county fire stations.

A Film About Dyslexia

 

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has made a film about dyslexia to raise awareness and encourage staff to get assessed if they think they may have it.

With a higher ratio of employees with dyslexia, the county’s fire and rescue service is one of only a few public sector organisations to run a special support programme acclaimed for changing the lives of staff.

A Taste Of Firefighting - For Women

Women interested in a career as on call firefighters’ attended a successful taster session at Albrighton Fire Station.

One sent in an application form immediately after the event attended by six women from across the county.

During the session they toured the fire station, checked out the equipment aboard fire appliances, tried on fire kit and experienced wearing breathing apparatus under instruction from the Albrighton crew.

The visitors also talked to women firefighters which now total 23 in Shropshire.

Dyslexia Award Nomination

 

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has been nominated for an award for its trailblazing work with employees with dyslexia.

The county fire service has been shortlisted for the Best Supportive Employer in the 2016 Dyslexia Awards – the first ceremony of its kind organised by a county dyslexic trainer to raise awareness about dyslexia.

About 70 staff out of more than 500 employees across the county’s 23 fire stations have been given support over the past nine years.
