A Firefighting Life for Shropshire Women

More Shropshire women interested in becoming county firefighters attended an introductory session at Shrewsbury fire HQ.

A total of 19 turned out for the third "taster" session over the weekend following on from similar events in Craven Arms and Oswestry earlier this year.

They learned how they could join the county’s 300 plus “on call” fully trained firefighters who deal with around the clock emergencies.

Women Firefighters - A "Taster" Day on July 19 in Shrewsbury

More women are being encouraged to become firefighters by enrolling with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A third “taster” day just for women will be held at Shrewsbury fire HQ on July 19 after two successful previous events in Craven Arms and Oswestry.

The brigade wants to attract more women to join the county’s 300 plus “on call” fully trained firefighters who deal with around the clock emergencies.

Women's Firefighting Taster Day

We are holding a taster event to encourage women to look at becoming part-time professional firefighters. To be a retained firefighter you need to live within 5 minutes of your local fire station, be fit and reliable, and be able to attend for duty at any time within your agreed hours. We provide training, support, promotion opportunities, excellent pay and conditions of service and a strong commitment to equality.

The event will include:

Safe Ageing No Discrimination Launch (SAND)

SAND started when a bunch of people went to see a film. 'GEN Silent' revealed the issues faced by older LGBT people accessing health and social care services in the USA. It inspired some of us to take a look at what is happening closer to home. We have been meeting for over a year, have developed a website, gathered supporters  and done some initial research. It now feels like the right time to come out!

The event is an opportunity to meet the team, hear about what has happened so far, see the presentation, chat with friends.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service fly rainbow flag to support IDAHO

Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service have raised a rainbow flag over their Shrewsbury Headquarters and Telford Training Centre to demonstrate their support for the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO).

The week long display of the rainbow flag marks their commitment to challenge homophobia, to provide a supportive and accepting workplace for LGBT employees; and to celebrate the recent same-sex marriage legislation.

On Holocaust Memorial Day 2014

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) is the charity which promotes and supports Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). 27 January is the day for everyone to remember the millions of people killed in the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. 27 January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

On HMD we can honour the survivors of these regimes of hatred and challenge ourselves to use the lessons of their experience to inform our lives today.

Oswestry Women’s Taster Day

We would like to say the Women’s Taster day at Oswestry Fire station on Saturday 26 October with a follow on the job related tests at Telford in December was a huge success. It was held to encourage women to consider careers as retained fire-fighters, and was advertised in the local press, radio and leaflet drops.
