DBS Check

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request. I can confirm that currently new staff at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are requested, as part of their their conditional offer of employment, to seek their own Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check through the UK Government website: Request a basic DBS check - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). This process also applies to employees moving into a new role in the Service. The fee for this is reimbursed by the Service upon verification.  Please note that none of our roles meet any of the criteria to DBS check any higher than basic. Furthermore, the legislation will be changing to include roles in the Fire and Rescue Services and the National Fire Chief’s Council (NFCC) have recently introduced guidance (NFCC successful in their bid to seek amendment to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) (nationalfirechiefs.org.uk), Safeguarding | NFCC CPO (ukfrs.com)), which will be used to determine which of our roles meet which level of check. A system for standard and enhanced checks will therefore be required for us to undertake these types of checks moving forward.
