Shropshire firefighters who worked tirelessly to free a dog trapped down a rabbit hole were named as finalists in the national Dogs Trust Honours 2011.

Using shovels and listening equipment designed to rescue people trapped in collapsed buildings, firefighters eventually got Cookie out in a rescue which took three hours.

Now in its fourth year, Dogs Trust Honours is the awards ceremony that celebrates the relationship between man and dog.

A major exercise to test emergency resilience saw representatives from 16 fire and rescue services visiting Avon this weekend.

More than 120 firefighters from as far afield as Northern Ireland and Merseyside joined colleagues from Avon Fire & Rescue Service in three large scale exercises. In scenarios taking place at Avonmouth Docks and Chew Valley Lake crews put 13 High Volume Pumps (HVPs) through their paces.

The dramatic story of how Shropshire firefighters ran into a burning home to rescue a young woman trapped upstairs will be re-told on TV’s popular BBC Real Rescues programme.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service attended an arson attack at 3:51am on Monday 23rd May at Briery Lane, Bicton Heath, Shrewsbury.

It is believed flammable material had been pushed though the letter box of a property, igniting the doorframe. A male occupant was woken by the sound of the letter box opening, and raised the alarm. The occupants managed to escape from the building.
