The team of ten firefighters who are cycling from Lands' End to John O'Groats stopped off in Shrewsbury overnight before heading North to Preston this morning.

The 90 mile journey will be made harder by the hot weather and there is a possibility that the team may have to cross the Mersey by ferry after being informed they are not allowed to cycle through the Mersey Tunnel.

The Red Cross is the latest county organisation to join Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in its successful campaign to reduce house fires.

The county fire service has been recruiting organisations which send out visitors to people's homes and training them to carry out simple fire risk assessments to help identify vulnerable householders.

A team of ten firefighters departed from Shrewsbury Fire Station on Friday for Lands' End where they began their gruelling cycle to John O'Groats.

The team made good time arriving in Lands' End at 5.30pm Friday evening where they completed the first instalment of their journey to Redruth, Cornwall.

Saturday saw the team successfully complete the journey from Redruth to Okehampton and yesterday evening saw the team reach Weston-Super-Mare.

A team from Newport High School has won the 2006 Be Cool Be Safe fire safety quiz organised by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The all girl team beat seven other Shropshire schools to the title at the grand final held at Telford fire station on Tuesday, April 25th. They were the overall winners from a total of 34 county schools which originally took part in regional heats held across the county in March.

A Charity Auction Night held by a team of local Firefighters has successfully raised a staggering £2,200 for the Macmillan Cancer Relief, Hope House and Fire Services National Benevolent Fund charities.

Bright sparks from eight Shropshire schools will battle it out in this year's county fire safety quiz final at Telford Central fire station tomorrow starting at 10am.

A total of 34 county schools have already taken part in regional heats across the county with the winning teams going head to head in the final.

The teams taking part are from schools in Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Telford and Newport.

A 15-year-old boy from Oswestry was rescued last night after becoming trapped down a disused well.

Two fire crews from Oswestry and a specialist Rescue Tender from Wellington were sent to the scene, where on arrival the Officer in charge was confronted with several youths who told him that one of their friends had fallen down the well.

A team of nine firefighters from Shropshire, who held a fundraising day at the Charles Darwin Centre, raised £1027 for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund, Hope House Children's Hospice and the local Macmillan Cancer Relief

The team will also be holding a Charity Auction Night at The Lion Hotel, Shrewsbury on 20 April as well as cycling the famous Lands' End to John O'Groats route from the 5-15 May. Both events are in support of the aforementioned charities.
