An appeal has gone out for more members of the public to apply to become retained firefighters across Shropshire.

Contributing to saving someone’s life is “quite a buzz”, said the man in charge of Ellesmere Fire Station.

During the day Steve Moorhouse (49) is an Operations Manager at a leading Shropshire company. Responsible for ensuring that Lloyds Animal Feeds is working smoothly, Steve is also the Watch Manager at the town’s fire station.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to reports of a fire at 05:22am this morning (Sunday) at York Street, Oswestry. As a result 3 Appliances were mobilised from Oswestry, Chirk and Ellesmere.

The alarm was raised by a passerby when they saw flames coming from the downstairs of a terraced property. A lady in her 20’s had escaped from the upstairs at the rear of the property onto a ground floor roof, she alerted local residents to the fact that another lady was still inside more

Activities planned for the event include a circus skills workshops and performances, a fire show, cake decorating competitions, archery, arts and crafts, an inflatable football and much more.

Last night Fire Control received around 50 calls mainly to flooding across Shropshire.

Advice was given to many of the callers; however we did attend a number of incidents in the Minsterley, Cleobury Mortimer and Ludlow areas. We have also attended an incident in the Tenbury area working alongside Hereford and Worcester Fire Service where 2 occupants of a property have been rescued.
