Wellington Firefighter Recruitment Campaign

A campaign to recruit more firefighters in Wellington has been launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

They want people who are physically fit and over 18 to consider a life as an “on call” firefighter especially those who can give cover during normal working hours.

Watch Manager Tony Talbot said: “We are looking for men and women to join the existing team of on-call firefighters based at Wellington.

Routine domestic chores have turned into nightmares for some families as dryers and washing machines caught fire, causing thousands of pounds in damage – and untold heartache for home owners.

Save Pets In House Fires Campaign

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service will now be only the second brigade in the UK to have pet oxygen masks available for any house fire attended by firefighters.

A Telford firefighter, dog charities and pet organisations have all contributed to the campaign, launched only last month, and collected a total of 15 pet oxygen masks for use on county fire appliances.

It all began with a charity walk last month in Ellesmere organised by Hectors Greyhound Rescue which rehomes greyhounds in Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales.

Fire Fighter Charity Success

Shropshire fire crews have smashed their fundraising target for the year by collecting £17,000 in a series of charity events.

They had aimed to raised £9,600 for the Fire Fighters’ Charity over the past 12 months but raised the bar to get an extra £7,400.

Charity Service co-ordinator Ashley Brown praised the fundraising enthusiasm from firefighting colleagues at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“It has been a fantastic year for both fundraising for the Fire Fighters Charity as well as raising the profile of the services on offer to all members.

Fire Safety Quiz Success

Schoolchildren were bowled over in the county fire safety quiz run by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A total of 48 youngsters from 12 county schools won a meal and bowling sessions courtesy of the management at the Ten Pin bowling alley in Telford.

In teams of four, the eleven and twelve-year-olds had won competitions at their individual schools after quick-fire questions on all aspects of safety.

Sparkling Success for Charity Car Wash

Firefighters raised a “sparkling” £3,000 for charity with a series of car washes across Shropshire.

Off duty fire crews hosed, soaped and shined hundreds of cars at eight county fire stations over the past few weeks receiving donations for their cleaning service.

Charity Service Co-ordinator Ashley Brown congratulated county motorists for their generosity.

“Once again the car washes have raised a fantastic amount of money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

Street Pastors Thank Firefighters Who Saved Their "Priceless" Van

Telford Street Pastors said a big thank you to firefighters who saved their “priceless” van from fire.

Rev Keith Osmund-Smith drove the newly repaired vehicle to Wellington Fire Station to personally thank the firefighting team from Green Watch which arrived within two minutes of a 999 call.

“I arrived expecting to see a smouldering wreck of a vehicle but the firefighters put the flames out so quickly. The response time from call to arrival was amazing and the swift efficiency with which they extinguished the blaze was almost miraculous.

Andrew's UK Fire Challenge Comes To Shropshire

A ten-year-old autistic boy’s challenge to visit every fire station in the UK comes to Shropshire on April 1.

Over four days Andrew Impey will visit all of the county’s 23 fire stations meeting firefighters and being given a VIP tour.

He arrives at Shrewsbury fire HQ at 9.30 on Friday, April 1, to be greeted by Chief Fire Officer John Redmond before a whistlestop tour of six more stations at Minsterley, Bishop’s Castle, Clun, Craven Arms, Ludlow and Church Stretton.

Easter Fire Safety Campaign

Remind friends and family about the importance of smoke alarms in the home – that is the fire safety message from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service this Easter.

Members of the fire prevention team have launched their annual Friends and Family campaign to encourage the use of smoke alarms in county homes.

They are calling on everyone in the Shropshire area to spread the word to friends, family and neighbours about the importance of every home having a smoke alarm that works and to test it regularly.

Arson: Don't accept it, report it!

Everyone can play their part in tackling fire crime this Arson Awareness Week, says Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Arson Prevention Forum.

There have been 389 deliberate fires in Shropshire since April 1st last year down from 453 for the previous 12 months.

“Arson accounts for almost half of all fires attended by the fire and rescue services and can have devastating effects in terms of its cost and consequences,” says Lee Howell, the Forum’s Independent Chairman.
