Electrical Home Fire Hazards

A quarter of all fires in Shropshire homes last year were caused by electrical appliances, revealed Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service at the launch of Electrical Fire Safety Week.

An added danger is that most people fail to register their new electric products which means they are unaware when a faulty product is recalled, said Becky Castle, of the brigade’s Fire Prevention Department.

A Burning Ambition for England’s George

A Shropshire sportsman is all fired up ready to play rugby for his country  - and hoping for a better result than the national side in the Rugby World Cup.

For Ludlow firefighter George Jacks (25) has been picked for the second time to play for the England fire service’s national squad.

A flanker for Ludlow Rugby Club, George will wear the number six shirt when he represents his country against Wales on October 15 at the Saracen’s ground in London with a 20,000 capacity crowd.

Word is spreading about a successful scheme helping to transform the lives of Shropshire employees with dyslexia.

Road Safety Demo For Lord Digby Jones

Lord Digby Jones keenly watched Shropshire firefighters as they professionally freed a driver “trapped” in the wreckage of a car in a road safety demonstration in the county.

He later sat inside the car, which had its roof removed, for photos to help publicise the campaign to raise awareness about road safety for business drivers.

The road safety event was organised by the TTC Group in Telford which educates 320,000 road users each year.

On Call Firefighter Campaign

The first “taster” day of 2015 to encourage more people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds to join the fire service as on call firefighters has been held in Shropshire.

An Army veteran, ex-student, office worker and engineer turned up at Wellington Fire Station in Telford at the weekend to talk to firefighters, tour the station, watch equipment demonstrations and hear about the recruitment process and career information.

Rock Star Boosts Shropshire Firefighters' Charity

Rock star Brian Ferry helped raise more than £200 for the Firefighters’ Charity at Wellington Fire Station’s open day.

His champagne gift to firefighters who helped save the life of son Merlin in a car crash in Shropshire last year was raffled at the event.

Raffle ticket sales were high during Saturday’s open day which saw a good public turnout watch Wellington firefighters showcase their skills including a demonstration from the brigade’s animal rescue team.

Wellington Fire Station Open Day

Firefighters will be in action to showcase their skills at an open day at Wellington Fire Station on Saturday, September 5.

Highlights include a demonstration from the brigade’s animal rescue team which featured on BBC Breakfast TV earlier this year.

A Novel Fire Safety Campaign

A novel fire safety campaign will be launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in August as it links up with the county’s mobile library.

Their fire prevention team will hop aboard the library van in August as it travels through scores of rural villages to deliver not just library books but also vital fire safety messages to the public.

It’s all part of the annual fire safety campaign to reduce injuries from accidental fires that traditionally increase during the summer.

"Destroyed" New Car Aids Shropshire Firefighters

A brand new car has been "destroyed" - but it’s all in a good cause to train the emergency services in Shropshire.

College students helped to strip down and rebuild the former demonstration car in their car maintenance classes.

The main pillars of the £30,000 black Chevrolet Captiva were completely sawn through so that the roof can be manually lifted off.
