Fire crews were involved in a number of severe incidents including:

Shropshire businesses are being warned to check their fire safety after fire officers identified a “worrying trend” among some firms which are putting lives at risk.

Fast food outlets with accommodation above are especially at risk.

Many business owners do not have integrated fire alarm systems fitted because they wrongly believe them to be too expensive, said Watch Manager Martin Huckle, Rural Fire Safety Supervisor for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Farm fires warning in Shropshire

Shrewsbury and north Shropshire farmers are urged to be aware of fire risks at harvest time and also take steps to help prevent arson. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and the NFU have issued advice to farmers and growers to avoid costly farm fires around the county - including Shrewsbury and north Shropshire which has suffered the highest number of farm fires in the county. Around 1,600 farm buildings and thousands of acres of land and crops are destroyed by accidental and deliberate fires in the UK each year.

SFRS advice to prevent arson is:

Magistrates have ordered a Shropshire hotel manager to pay fines and costs totaling £5,355 in a landmark court case brought after the fire alarm failed to go off in the premises.

Nine residents were staying at the Plume of Feathers at Harley, near Shrewsbury, in the early hours of July 27 last year when the wife of the hotel manager opened the bedroom door to find smoke in the corridor.

Suspicious fire at Telford industrial unit

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service attended a fire at an industrial unit on Halefield 19 at 5.25pm on Sunday 11 July. A large amount of wooden pallets bins and containers were alight outside the factory causing a propane cylinder to explode in the heat. The force of this blast blew a hole in both the wall of the factory and the roller shutter door, setting fire to items inside the factory.
