5 a side football tournament

As I stand in the queue for the lift on the ground floor of Headquarters (the stairs are looking like a daunting task for some reason!) a number of colleagues have already commented on what a great afternoon was had by all at the Shrewsbury Sports Village on Sunday.

Thanks to the superb efforts of Nick Davies (RW/SY) 13 teams and their supporters came together to revive what has always traditionally been an annual Service 5 a side football tournament.

Tournament kicks off

Teams from Fire Control, BN, BFS, BS, BW/TC, GW/SY, RW/TC, WH, HQ, SY/RDS, WL/RDS, BW/SY & RWSY participated throughout the afternoon with the tournament culminating in closely fought out semi-finals between;

Wellington RDS v RW/TC

&

BWTC v Shrewsbury RDS

Wellington RDS & BWTC progressed to the final with Wellington RDS eventually coming out on top 2-0 winners. In the post-match interview Captain Tony Talbot put the success down to him surrounding himself with four other people who could play football and building a team to support him in his ‘static’ holding midfield role!

Presentations to the winners and runners up (who unfortunately had to rush off on nights) were made by DCFO John Redmond in a social gathering at the Coracle Pub. The awards also included a special ‘taking part’ prize of a wooden spoon trophy which this year was presented to Fire Control. All prizes will of course need defending next year. Thanks go to Nick Davies for organising the event so seamlessly and the Coracle Pub for providing the post tournament food.

This is the first of a number of a number of social events we are currently planning, the next being a pub quiz to be held later in the year organised by Alison Pritchard and Louise Goodhead. Watch out for dates which will be published shortly.

The Social & Welfare Association is primarily financially supported by the Tote draw which all employees and retired members are entitled to have 5 numbers in and all money is used in the form of grants to support.

  3. Brigade competitions.
  4. Station or department activities.

Overall the Association is active for the following objectives;

  2. Encouragement and organisation of the above activities at Brigade, Area and Station level.
  3. The promotion of all activities which promote comradeship, cooperation and wellbeing amongst members of the Service.
