Alert to businesses, colleges and schools after bogus fire service calls

Shropshire businesses, colleges and schools are being warned not to be duped by a con man pretending to be from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire brigade has received several calls from people upset at apparent "cold calling" by a man claiming that they are selling advertising space in a brigade publication. The gentleman claims to be 'Mr Jones' and often asks for a senior member of staff. When asked what the call is regarding he often becomes abusive. As a number of Brigades have experienced similar incidents Trading Standards are now conducting a nation wide investigation.

All genuine members of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service staff will be happy to provide you with their name, position and contact details.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service does not ring people and ask them to buy advertising space, and has not authorised anyone to do so on its behalf.

  • Take a name and telephone number and ask for the offer to be made in writing.
