'Find Your Reason' to be an on call firefighter

From helping those involved in road traffic collisions to assisting with flood relief and educational school visits, the role of an on-call firefighter is varied, rewarding and challenging. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are launching a recruitment campaign to give an insight into life in this extraordinary career.

The ‘Find Your Reason’ campaign is inspired by the amazing people who currently serve their local communities as on-call firefighters as well as their usual careers.

The Service currently employs on-call firefighters who respond from home or work to provide Shropshire’s required essential fire cover at 22 of our 23 stations across the county. In particular we are looking to attract potential on-call firefighters in the local communities of Much Wenlock, Prees, Shrewsbury, Clun and Craven Arms.  Applications are also very much welcomed from individuals who live or work within five minutes of a community fire station.

To apply you need to:

  •
  • Be aged 18 or over (there is no maximum age)
  • Live or work within five minutes of your local on-call fire station (you can find your local station here)
  • Committed to providing your time to respond at short notice (mutually agreed working hours of response will be discussed with individuals upon application)
  • Pass job related tests
  • Have a good all round level of physical fitness & be committed to maintaining personal fitness and well being

Station Manager Jody Hurlstone, lead for on-call recruitment, said:
