Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is highlighting the importance of smoke alarms following a house fire in Sutton Hill, Telford.
The Service was called at around 2pm on Sunday 31 October to Southgate where a fire had started in a bedroom of the property.
Crews from Telford and Tweedale attended, and four firefighters wore breathing apparatus while using a hose reel jet and a covering jet to tackle the fire.
Thankfully the occupiers were alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm which meant they were able to exit the building quickly and call the fire service.
Group Manager Russ Hales, Head of Prevention and Protection said:
“This incident goes to show how important it is to have working smoke alarms in your home. If the residents had not been warned so early on, the results could have been far worse.
“Please ensure you have smoke alarms on every floor of your home and test them regularly to confirm they are working.”
The Service carried out a fire investigation and found the cause is believed to have been discarded smoking materials.
Russ Hales added: “Please take care when smoking and always put your smoking materials out in a proper ash tray that is emptied regularly. It is also equally important to make sure the cigarette is completely out when you leave the room.”
