Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is working with RMW Electrical of Shrewsbury to test electric blankets for free in the Shrewsbury and Oswestry areas.
If the pilot scheme is successful, it is hoped to offer more sessions later this year across the county.
Community fire safety officers will be at the Lantern Centre, Meadow Farm Drive, Shrewsbury, on Friday, February 17. But people need to book their appointment by first calling Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service on 01743 260260 between Monday, February 6 and 10 during office hours.
They will also be at Oswestry Fire Station, Mount Road, Oswestry, on Friday, March 2. To book your place for the Oswestry session call 01743 260 260 between February 20 and 24.
If you are unable to bring your blanket along to be tested, here are some useful safety tips:
Never buy or use a second hand blanket. Do not use with a hot water bottle. Check regularly for scorch marks or visual signs of damage. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. More importantly, make sure you have working smoke alarms on each level of your home.
