Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service launched its new Electrical Fire Safety Campaign with a nostalgic flare.
On Monday 11th November the Service kicked off its lately campaign, called Wah Wise, to encourage members of the public to ‘take care of their tumble’ and keep their white good clean and well maintained.
Washing machines and tumble dryers are the leading cause of fires in the home here in Shropshire. Between April 2021 and September 2024, there were 91 electrical fires throughout the county, so it is important that you ‘Wash Wise’ but following these top tips:
- Clean your tumble’s filter regularly. Build ups of lint and debris can ignite.
- Use a dedicated plug socket. Avoid plugging your washing machine or tumble dryer into a socket with other appliance and they use a large amount of power.
- Turn off when you turn in- always turn off your washing machine and tumble dryer before you go to bed or leave the property.
- Check for damage. Always maintain your appliance and if something is faulty or damaged, repair or replace it.
- Buy from a reputable dealer.
Register your appliance- you will then be alerted if your appliance is subjected to a recall or has any underlying faults.
Do not tumble dry items covered in grease, fats or solvents- these items are likely to overheat and can combust.
Prevention Officer Archie Walkerdine said: “We know people live busy lives, whether you're at work all day or running around after children, and the temptation to put on a wash or a load to dry when you go to bed is high. But if you do this and something goes wrong you're not able to react quickly to evacuate and call 999.
"It is also so important you maintain your appliances to prevent them from setting fire in the first place. We created this nostalgic and fun campaign to remind the public how to wash wise and keep you and your loved ones safe."
