A Shropshire firefighter has been “hotfooting” around the county for hundreds of miles over the past few months in training for the world famous London marathon.

Within the next two weeks, Kat Frost (32), will swap the streets of Clun for the roads of the UKs capital when she takes part for the first time in the tough 26 mile race on April 22.

It will be a dream come true for the Clun firefighter who received her coveted marathon place after applying to the Fire Fighters charity.

She has already raised £4,000 from friends, family and work colleagues via her Just Giving page on the internet along with numerous cake sales at Clun and Shrewsbury fire stations and a promise auction supported by local businesses.

“It is a big challenge but I’m determined to get around. I want to enjoy the atmosphere on the day,” said Kat, who is used to a challenge when she lost seven stones in weight to get fit enough to pass the firefighter entrance tests more than five years ago.

The former nursery nurse is one of Clun Fire Station’s 13 “on call” firefighters.

Kat has been regularly pounding the roads around Clun to get marathon fit upping her five to eight mile route to 15 and now 20 miles in preparation for the big day on April 22.

Her family, including children Ava (7) and Ellis (5) will be watching out for her on the TV screen at home to try and pick her out from the thousands of competitors.

The charity’s regional fund raiser Debbie Rushbrooke said: “Kat has already smashed her original target of £2,000 doubling it to more than £4,000. It’s an amazing achievement and she has worked really hard. We all wish her well on the day.”

Kat was among 40 UK firefighters who applied to the charity for a place in the world famous race with just 13 being successful.
