The Telford & Wrekin Safer Communities Partnership has this week launched its ‘Celebrate Safely’ campaign to encourage people to have fun this autumn, but to also be mindful of their own and others safety.
Autumn time brings a whole host of fun and celebrations, including bonfire night, Diwalli and Halloween. But these events and festivities can also induce fear and worry to vulnerable members of our communities.
Partners in the Telford & Wrekin Safer Communities Partnership, which includes Telford & Wrekin Council, West Mercia Police and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, are running a campaign to remind young and old to act responsibly. Have fun, but have respect for others.
Fireworks and bonfires in particular can be dangerous. Serious injury and death can be caused by their misuse. There are some useful tips on how to keep safe online at www.safertelford.org.uk
Cllr Miles Hosken, Cabinet Member for Community Protection and Cohesion, said: “We want you to really enjoy this time of year with friends and family, but would like to remind you to be mindful of others. Have fun, but have respect and act responsibly.
“Pets are also vulnerable so keep them inside on nights of celebration. Help make this Autumn safe and fun for you and others. However, if you are a witness or victim of anti-social behaviour in your neighbourhood, call the ASB hotline on 01952 384384.”
To ensure bonfire and fireworks night is safe and enjoyable, we would urge you to always attend organised events. This year there is the Donnington Mammoth Bonfire, Firework Display and Funfair on Saturday 13 November at 6pm with free entry, as well as Brookside Xtra Firework Display on Thursday 18 November (field next to Windmill School.)

But it’s not just children and young people who need to stay safe. To keep you and others safe during this period and as the darker nights creep in, here are some personal safety tips:
Halloween/trick or treating
- Don’t let children go out alone after dark.
- Only go to houses where you know the residents and let them know what time you plan to call.
- Do not knock on doors where there is a sign saying ‘Do Not Disturb’ or ‘Sorry No Trick or Treat’. For your own sign visit www.safertelford.org.uk
Bonfire night
- Only attend organised bonfires or firework displays.
- If you have your own bonfire, dispose of the ashes safely and responsibly.
- Don't set off fireworks after 11pm, except on 5 November when this is extended to midnight. Do not make excessive noise at any time of the year after 11pm.
- It is illegal for anyone aged under 18 to buy fireworks or to have them in a public place.
- Make sure an adult, over 18 handles any firework. Never let a child near them.
If you are worried about anti-social behaviour, are a witness or victim, call the Telford & Wrekin ASB Reporting Line on 01952 384384.
