Police today appealed for witnesses following an arson attack on an Oswestry fitness club.
A lighted newspaper was pushed through the letterbox of Zion Fitness in Coney Green between 8.30pm and 10.10pm Wednesday 29th February 2012. It was discovered when an alarm sounded in the premises and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service attended.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said today: "Fortunately, the newspaper smouldered on the doormat and burnt itself out within a few minutes. However, the consequences could have been much more serious if the fire had taken hold.
"The incident is being treated as a deliberate act and we are appealing for witnesses who may have seen someone acting suspiciously near the location last night. If you spotted anything which might assist the investigation, please contact Oswestry police station by calling 101." Damage amounted to around £500 and was contained to the door, doormat and some smoke damage to the décor.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended a fire at 12.10am on Tuesday 28th February at a derelict property in Middleton Road Oswestry, which was severely damaged by fire; the fire is being treated as suspicious. Empty properties should be secured using good quality shuttering and padlocks and any valuables removed from the building.
