The Safer Telford and Wrekin Partnership is once again driving forward its Celebrate Safely Campaign during the fortnight that includes Halloween and Bonfire Night.
To help promote the importance of celebrating safely, Cinderella Pantomime stars such as Mark Two and Jamie Sheen (Ugly sisters) are getting in on the action by helping the Safer Telford & Wrekin Partnership launch this years competition. This will feature on Celebrate Safely postcards that include handy hints and tips for families across the borough.
The Celebrate Safely postcard, which is shortly to be distributed across Telford and Wrekin, offers local people safety advice relating to Halloween and Bonfire Night to try and ensure that everyone can enjoy the events safely, or are not inconvenienced or upset by them if they choose not to.
This years competition questions is:
What did the Fairy Godmother turn into a horse and carriage to get Cinderella to the ball?
- a dog and a candle
- a cat and a firework
- mice and a pumpkin.

The Safer Telford and Wrekin Partnership is made up of a wide range of public, private and voluntary agencies locally, including Telford & Wrekin Council, West Mercia Police, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and The Wrekin Housing Trust. The organisations are all working together to tackle and reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and alcohol and drugs misuse.
Speaking about the campaign, Councillor Hilda Rhodes, Cabinet Member for Transport & Community Protection, said: "The period around Halloween and Bonfire Night often sees an increase in reports of anti-social behaviour and we hope this campaign can help reduce this.
"These events are great for children and families to enjoy but we do not want the excitement to impact negatively on vulnerable people locally who may find bonfires and fireworks worrying prospects.
"Our aim is to ensure that Celebrate Safely fortnight period can pass without incident and we hope the advice on our postcard will help that happen.
"As well as containing safety advice, the postcards that have been produced also include a competition to win a Family Ticket to this years Cinderella Pantomime at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place which everyone is welcome to enter. We are extremely grateful to the theatre for donating the prize for this competition."
The safety advice that can be found on the Celebrate Safely postcard includes:
- Attend one of the organised bonfires or firework displays in your neighbourhood
- Throwing eggs or flour is classed as a criminal offence and you could be arrested
- Be considerate by not making excessive noise or setting off fireworks after 11pm
- Please do not disturb residents where there is a sign saying 'Do Not Disturb' or 'Sorry No Trick or Treat'. Door signs can be downloaded at www.westmercia.police.uk
The local policing team, CSO target team and Community Payback will be distributing postcards throughout a number of areas, but if anyone would like to get one they are also available in Telford and Wrekin Community Centres, First Point in Civic Offices and from all The Wrekin Housing Trust local offices.
