A campaign to recruit more firefighters in Wellington has been launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

They want people who are physically fit and over 18 to consider a life as an “on call” firefighter especially those who can give cover during normal working hours.

Watch Manager Tony Talbot said: “We are looking for men and women to join the existing team of on-call firefighters based at Wellington.

“Ideally we want people who can provide valuable daytime cover between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. These people are key to ensuring the appliance remains available for emergency calls during the daytime.”

Anyone interested is urged to visit Wellington Fire Station in Haybridge Road at 6.30pm on any Tuesday evening during the crew’s regular drill night.

“If you want to know more, please pop along to the station on a Tuesday evening at 6.30pm to discuss further and get more information,” added Tony.

More than 80 per cent of county firefighters are “on call” living near 23 fire stations, many of them rural.

On call firefighters must live or work within five minutes of a fire station and are needed to turn out for a set number of hours each week to answer 999 calls and attend weekly drill sessions.

The brigade provides full training, support, promotion opportunities, excellent pay, uniform and conditions of service.
