A major fire and rescue training exercise took place at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital when firefighters tested their skills in part of the former maternity building.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service used sections of the building to carry out realistic rescues using breathing apparatus and search and rescue techniques.
Fire officers also tested their communication, casualty handling and incident command procedures during the training event on July 9.
A total of 20 firefighters from Shrewsbury and Telford and four fire appliances were at the scene.
Crew Manager Alex Howell, of Shrewsbury’s Green Watch, thanked hospital staff for allowing them to use part of the hospital for their fire drills.
He said: “The training exercise went very well. It was a fantastic venue for us to train at. We were able to practice our breathing apparatus search and rescue skills plus our command and structure.
“A big thank you to the Shrewsbury hospital and the estates team who helped us a great deal to set the exercise up.
Steve Lewis, Estates Site Manager at RSH, said: “We were more than happy to help Shropshire firefighters in their training exercise and provide them with a realistic environment to train in.
“I would like to extend this partnership as it not only benefits the fire service but is also good for us for them to develop a good understanding of our buildings should anything ever happen in the future.”
