River levels are still rising, and flood warnings are in place for the River Severn at Ironbridge and Jackfield with levels expected to peak tonight. Flooding is also expected in Bridgnorth in due course.
Chief Fire Officer Rod Hammerton said: “Around two-thirds of drowning deaths in the UK happen at inland waters, many of those involved people who never intended to go in the water.
“Also, given the COVID-19 pandemic, we all have a part to play in keeping our county’s accident and injury rates as low as possible, ensuring the number of admissions to hospital at a minimum.
“We’re asking people not to increase the strain on all the emergency services by staying clear of flooded areas, to heed road closures signs and not to drive into flood water."
Flooding can can quickly put lives at risk in the home, on the roads and while outdoors. Avoid using low lying footpaths near our rivers, respect any road closures and do not attempt to drive through flood water – 30cm is enough to float a vehicle including 4x4s and vans.
Fire crews are working closely with partners such as the Environment Agency and local authorities to ensure support is availbale throughout the weekend.
