A team of quickfire quiz experts from Oldbury Wells School, near Bridgnorth, have been declared the winners of this year's fire safety quiz run by Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service.

A Shrewsbury fire control operator kept a trapped householder calm as she waited for fire crews to arrive at her smoke logged Shropshire home after fire broke out.

Oswestry businesswoman Eirwen Day (44) dialled 999 after seeing smoke pouring up the staircase of her home just after 2pm today (Thursday). She couldn't get downstairs and retreated into a bedroom of the semi detached house in Station Road, Whittington, where she called for help.

Firefighters were praised for their dedicated service to Shropshire at a special awards ceremony held at Shrewsbury Fire HQ.

Lord Lieutenant Algernon Heber-Percy presented Long Service and Good Conduct Medals to ten firefighters from across the county.

He thanked them for their loyalty and bravery in carrying out service to the community and praised wives, partners and children for their support which included giving up holidays and experiencing regular disturbed mealtimes. more

Hodnet RDS supported by Retained Support Officers recently held a recruit morning on Saturday 21st March at Hodnet Fire Station. The session ran from 10.30am till 1pm and gave potential new recruits an opportunity to take part in various practical sessions such as the equipment carry and ladder climb. They also viewed the recruitment information DVD and Hodnet staff were at hand to discuss the role of a retained firefighter.
