Serving her community as an on-call firefighter

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has a responsibility to keep our communities safe in our large and smaller market towns, and also in the rural areas of our beautiful county.

22 fire stations in Shropshire include on-call firefighters – men and women who are aged 18+, who live or work within five minutes of the fire station, and who can commit to being on-call for a minimum of 84 hours of each week.  They form more than 70% of more

How do we pay for your service?

We receive around 27% of our budget from government grant and business rates, with the balance coming from council tax. Government grants have been decreasing since 2011/12, and we have reduced our budget to deal with this fall in income. Increases have been made to our council tax so that we can continue to offer a quality service to the public of Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.

The warning comes as part of Electrical Safety Week, a national campaign aimed at reducing the number of domestic fires caused by faulty and mis-used electrical appliances and fittings.

Shropshire firefighters have issued an invitation to members of the public to join them at the fire service’s first ever Christmas Ball next month (Dec).

“We have never held a Christmas Ball before and so we decided it would be great to share the first one with the people we serve,” said one of the event’s organisers, Emily Hodson, a technical support officer based at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Shrewsbury headquarters.

Fire service experts are urging people to attend organised bonfire night events rather than hold their own in their garden or on waste ground.

The advice comes ahead of what is expected to be a busy weekend of bonfires and fireworks across Shropshire and this year the fire service has teamed up with police, local councils, housing providers and other partners to provide the public with fire safety advice.
