Motorists are being urged to be extra vigilant following a spate of car fires in the Telford and Wellington areas.

Firefighters have been called to eight fires involving ten cars in October and investigators at Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service say it is likely the fires were started deliberately.

The fire service says it would normally expect to deal with two or three car fires a month.

A fire service campaign aimed at promoting fire safety and other “safe and well” messages received a big boost this week when it was told it could display its campaign posters free of charge on high-profile advertising “information pillars” in Shrewsbury.

Following talks between Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service and the company that owns the sites, PIP Advertising, the company agreed to waive the thousands of pounds advertising on its pillars would usually cost.

Hundreds of visitors attended an action packed open day at Shrewsbury Fire Station which raised more than £600 for the Fire Fighters charity.

Vivid demonstrations and displays throughout the day helped to get over important messages to the public about fire safety, road safety and how everyone should always have a smoke alarm in the home, said organiser Neil Maguire, Watch Manager on Red Watch at the Shrewsbury station.

A fun packed open day is forecast at Shrewsbury Fire Station on Saturday, August 18 with a host of eye opening activities for all the family.

Practical demonstrations of firefighter skills and equipment will show how they rescue people in emergencies alongside advice for the public to prevent house fires.

It was a fun evening at a Shropshire fire station for children from Chernobyl during an annual visit to the county.

Shrewsbury firefighters from Blue Watch, put on an evening of entertainment for ten youngsters aged between eight and 12, which included playing with water from fire hoses.
