A Shropshire fire station has found a novel way to recycle old fire helmets by turning them into hanging baskets.

A bit of compost and a few blooms with holes drilled into the bottom of the bright yellow helmets has created an eye catching floral display to brighten up the outside of Market Drayton fire station.

Live music, dance displays, workshops and stalls will entertain shoppers and visitors in The Square from midday to 4pm as part of the celebrations.

Telford firefighters demonstrated their skills at a “hugely successful” open day at Telford Central Fire Station.

Families galore arrived early to watch eye catching demonstrations including a chip pan bursting into flames, a rope rescue from a high tower and a display showing how firefighters rescue animals.

Telford mayor, Councillor Stephen Reynolds, volunteered to be the front seat driver cut out of a car by firefighters.

There looks like being no shortage of action and drama planned for this Saturday’s (July 8) open day at Telford Central Fire Station.

Firefighters are teaming up with police and ambulance crews to put on series of dramatic demonstrations including rescuing “casualties” from a road traffic collision, an “animal” rescue and the rescue of a “casualty” from a high tower.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with local councils and Citizens’ Advice to create a new method of getting help and support to vulnerable people.

Firefighters already visit more than 3,500 homes each year to conduct fire safety checks and to give advice to people identified as vulnerable, including the elderly, disabled and people living alone. If firefighters feel that someone needed additional help they contact the local authority on an informal basis and pass on more

Villagers and businesses in Clun have thrown their support behind the village's firefighters and their bid to raise cash for those affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Locals have chipped in with donations of raffle prizes that include free meals at the village pub, a hairdo at the cillage's hairdressing salon, bottles of wine and much more.

They will be up for grabs on Saturday when firefighters will be staging a car wash between 10am and 2pm at Clun fire station.

Women interested in a career as firefighters’ attended a successful taster session at Oswestry Fire Station aimed at encouraging more to join Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

During the session they toured the fire station, checked out the equipment aboard fire appliances, tried on fire kit and experienced wearing breathing apparatus under instruction from firefighters.

A small slice of Hollywood came to Shropshire recently for the premiere of a movie that it’s hoped will persuade children not to make hoax 999 calls or start fires deliberately.

The film, “It’s Too Late Now,” stars a five pupils from the Madeley Academy and follows the tragic journey of one of them, Josh, played by 13-year-old Joe Gazzillo from the moment he makes his first hoax 999 call to the moment the door of a prison cell slams shut behind him.

In the early hours of this morning fire swept through a 24-storey residential tower block in north Kensington in London.

This unfolding tragedy at Grenfell Tower continues even as we speak but at this stage we do know that there are an unknown number of fatalities and more than 50 people have been taken to hospitals in the area. Many others are missing.
